Westport PD seeking Bridgeport man for thefts

WESTPORT-Police are searching for a 19-year old Bridgeport man who is wanted in connection with a series of burglaries in the Sandhopper Trail area.

Police Lt. Jillian Cabana said a warrant has been issued for the arrest of Xavier Medel. She has asked that anyone having information on his whereabouts contact Westport police.

Cabana warned that Medel is believed to be armed and is considered dangerous.

Police believe he is responsible for a Dec. 23 burglary of a house and car at Sandhopper Trail. The victim told police that someone entered her unlocked car and home between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m.

A purse containing cash and credit cards was stolen from the vehicle and a computer and backpack were taken from a living room in the home.

Cabana said one of the victim’s credit cards was used to charge $1,850 at a McDonald’s restaurant and a Sunoco gas station and convenience store in Norwalk.

While investigating this complaint, police received reports of additional burglaries on Gault Avenue, Ledge Meadow Lane and Crystal Circle. Cabana said there were multiple video doorbell activations along with reports of suspicious people in the area.

Police and probation officials identified Medel from surveillance photos as one of the suspects..

A warrant for his arrest was issued Dec. 27. It charges him with first and third degree burglary, conspiracy to commit first and third degree burglary, fourth degree larceny and conspiracy to commit fourth degree larceny, credit card theft and conspiracy to commit credit card theft.

Cabana said detectives are continuing their investigation with the hope to identify other suspects. In the meantime, police urge to lock their doors, garages and vehicles.
