4 plead not guilty in burglary that ended in suspect’s death
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Four people charged in an attempted burglary in which an officer fatally shot a suspect have pleaded not guilty.
The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports that 29-year-old Christopher Tyrone Perkins Jr., 20-year-old Chrishawn Alexander Perkins, 20-year-old Casey Andrew Tucker and 23-year-old Raynee Nicole Herman entered their pleas on various charges related to the Nov. 16 incident on Monday.
The four are accused of attempting to rob a home. Responding Charleston police officer Seth Johnson was shot in the chest and returned fire, killing the original shooter, Seth Hardwick. Johnson was wearing a bulletproof vest, and was released from the hospital the same day.
Prosecutor Monica Schwartz says she’ll likely file a motion to have four separate trials before the May 7 scheduled trial date.
