MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) _ Corey Gipson scored 19 points, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range, to lead Austin Peay to an 81-80 overtime victory over Memphis Friday.

The victory was the only the fourth for the Governors (1-0) in 15 meetings between the schools, and the first since the 1951-52 season.

The two teams were tied 69-69 at the end of regulation.

Rhet Wierzba, who finished with 13 points, had key baskets near the end of regulation and in overtime. The forward’s steal and layup with a minute left in regulation tied the game at 69.

In overtime, his 3-pointer with 1:13 remaining gave the Governors a 79-75 lead, which the Tigers could not overcome.

Memphis (1-1) had an opportunity to win the game in the final seconds after Austin Peay turned the ball over with 3.9 seconds left. But a long 3-point shot by Nathaniel Root was off the mark.

Josh Lewis finished with 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds for Austin Peay, while Anthony Davis added 13 points.

Earl Barron led the Tigers with a career-high 26 points, but shot only 8-of-26 from the floor. His seven points in overtime gave the Tigers an early lead in the extra period.

John Grice added 18 for Memphis, while Anthony Rice finished with 15.

Memphis dressed just seven regular players for the game because of injuries, suspensions and family funerals. Tiger coach John Calipari filled in the squad with a redshirt quarterback from the Tiger football team, a worker in the basketball office and a former team manager who was washing windows when Calipari called earlier this week.

Austin Peay took a 39-37 lead at the half behind Gipson’s 3-point shooting. The guard hit 3-of-6 from long range en route to 13 first-half points.

Meanwhile, Memphis was struggling with its offense, looking sluggish at times and getting beat 26-19 on the boards. Rice led the Tigers with 10 points in the half.
