Huntington blaze leaves 2 dead
A woman and a child died early Sunday in a Huntington house fire, while another woman and two children escaped by jumping from a second-story window, the Huntington County coroner’s office said.
Huntington firefighters and police were called to the fire at 333 Lee St. shortly after 4 a.m. Police were told two people were not accounted for, the coroner’s office said in a statement.
Police kicked in the back door but were unable to enter because of the intense flames, the statement said. It said firefighters’ attempts to enter were also unsuccessful because of structural integrity issues.
The woman who jumped out the window broke her ankle and suffered smoke inhalation, the statement said. She and the children, whose injuries were not immediately available, were taken to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
It took firefighters 11/2 hours to bring the fire under control, the statement said, and a woman was found on the first floor and a child was found on the second floor.
Several cats and dogs in the residence also died, the statement said.
The Huntington Fire Department and the state fire marshal’s office are investigating the cause of the house fire.
The coroner’s office plans to identify the woman and child who died after it notifies relatives and completes autopsies.
