New Kids On The Block announces Lincoln show with 4 other recognizable ’80s acts

October 8, 2018

New Kids on the Block will top an ’80s bill when “The Mixtape Tour” hits Pinnacle Bank Arena on June 8.

In addition to the “You Got It (The Right Stuff)” boy band, the tour will include Salt-N-Pepa, Naughty by Nature, Debbie Gibson and Tiffany.

The nostalgia package will play 53 cities from May through mid-July and is aimed at bringing back the musical combination that flourished on Top 40 radio and MTV in the ’80s and early ’90s — right down to the anachronistic name of the tour in the playlist era.

“We’re creating a mixtape on tour every night and in every city,” NKOTB’s Donnie Wahlberg said in the tour’s announcement. “It’s going to be fun, happiness, emotions, tears, joy and love.”

NKOTB, which first played Lincoln at the Nebraska State Fair in the mid-’80s and has been a tour staple since it reunited in 2008, last performed in Nebraska in June 2017 at Omaha’s CenturyLink Center (now CHI Health Center).

“When we got back together in 2008, I had no expectations,” NKOTB’s Danny Wood told the Journal Star last year. “I remember the opener, in Toronto, I couldn’t believe the sound and the size of the crowd. They were all still there. And they’re bringing their daughters, their nieces and there’s a younger crowd. It’s amazing to get a second chance at doing this and doing it right.”

Teenage mall popster Tiffany also headlined a Bob Devaney Sports Center concert back in the day. Debbie Gibson, who became a Broadway and television performer after her late ’80s hitmaking days; “Shoop” rappers Salt-N-Pepa, one of the first all-female hip-hop groups; and Grammy winning rappers Naughty By Nature will share the tour stage with NKOTB on what will be a night packed with performances.

In addition to announcing the tour Monday, NKOTB dropped a new track, “’80s Baby,” which features all its touring partners.

Tickets for the Lincoln concert go on public sale at 10 a.m. Friday. Tickets are $26.95 to $156.95 and will be available at the arena ticket office, ticketmaster.com and by phone at 800-745-3000.
