Baby Fatally Mauled By Family Dog

December 5, 1987

DETROIT (AP) _ Police shot to death a mixed boxer-pit bull terrier after the dog fatally mauled a sleeping 2-week-old baby, officers said.

Brian Lillis was pronounced dead in his family’s apartment from head injuries suffered in the attack, reported shortly after 2 a.m. Friday, Sgt. Chris Buck said.

The infant was asleep in a car seat on a sofa in the living room when he was pulled to the floor and attacked by the 40-pound dog, according to police reports. Five other people were in the apartment at the time, but the infant’s parents were not, Officer Fred Zaharoff said.

The infant’s older siblings had taken in the stray dog several months ago, and the animal had not acted violent in the past, neighbors told police.

Police killed the dog at the request of a Wayne County deputy medical examiner who accompanied them to the apartment, Buck said.

The case remained under investigation as a homicide, Buck said.
