STUART, Fla. (AP) _ A marijuana-laden plane crashed while trying to land on a closed section of Interstate 95, killing its pilot, and two men were aressted while trying to haul the contraband away, police said.

″He hit a couple of pine trees on the median strip,″ Martin County Sheriff’s Sgt. Billy Chase said of the unidentified pilot killed late Monday on a new section of the highway.

An estimated 400 pounds of marijuana was found scattered in and around the destroyed, single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza, Chase said.

Shortly afterward and about 15 miles away, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper stopped a truck that was dragging its muffler, said FHP Lt. Max Shell.

The two men were arrested after the trooper discovered seven bales of marijuana in the truck with wrappings identical to the bales around the plane, Shell said. They were charged with marijuana trafficking.
