Lady ’Stangs suffer tough loss to The Meadows
NEEDLES — It was a tough loss for the Needles High School Lady ’Stangs as they dropped a doubleheader against their NIAA 2A South League rivals The Meadows High School Lady Mustangs on Sept. 20 in The Corral.
The final scores in the first match were The Meadows 25 - Needles 9 and The Meadows 25 - Needles 6. The final scores in the second match were The Meadows 25 - Needles 11 and The Meadows 25 - Needles 13.
The doubleheader loss brings the Lady ’Stangs overall record to 3-4 with a 2-4 league record.
Throughout the course of the doubleheader, the Lady ’Stangs were playing from behind and couldn’t muster enough offense to cut the deficit. They were able to break the The Meadows girls’ serve a couple of times but it wasn’t enough to climb back into the game.
“I think that we came out a little flat and I think we weren’t totally warmed up quite yet,” said Phelps.
The Lady ’Stangs struggled to cover their spots and they were beat multiple times by the The Meadows girls’ tipping the ball over the defenders’ outstretched arms.
“We worked on digging and hitting but they placed the ball well and we weren’t able to anticipate them at all,” said Phelps. “We are a young team and our anticipation will get better as we play more games.”
The Lady ’Stangs were able to get some kills from Riley Breaux, Katie Cameron and Paige Murch, however, The Meadows were able to break the Lady ’Stangs’ serve more often than not.
“I told them not to beat themselves up over it since we knew that they were a hitting team and they are a really good team,” said Phelps. “We did try adjusting and we were able to get some kills and dig some balls but we couldn’t get all of them. We are definitely going to be working on our coverage and getting better at reading and anticipating the game.”
The Lady ’Stangs take a break from league play. Their Sept. 28 road trip against Lincoln County has been canceled; they’ll host the Lady Lynx on Oct. 24. Needles’ girls travel to take on the Mohave Accelerated Learning Center Lady Patriots on Oct. 1 starting at 4:30 p.m. for junior varsity and 5:30 p.m. for varsity. They resume league play in The Corral when they take on the Calvary Chapel High School Lady Lions on Oct. 5, starting at 4 and 5 p.m. for varsity only.
