Police: Man dies when tree trunk falls on vehicle’s cab
RICHMOND, R.I. (AP) — Police say a Rhode Island man who was pinned in the cab of a logging vehicle by a 20-foot long, 18-inch wide tree trunk that fell on it has died.
Richmond police in a statement Wednesday identified the victim of Tuesday’s accident as 25-year-old Richard Mopps, of Coventry.
Police say Mopps was operating a skid steer loader with a grapple attachment at a work site in town at about 3 p.m. Tuesday when the tree trunk being hoisted pitched forward and fell onto the vehicle’s cab. The force bent the safety bar of the driver’s compartment, pinning Mopps.
He was removed by firefighters using a cutting tool but died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.
Police say the death appears accidental.
