Lucent Plans Mobile Phones in China
BEIJING (AP) _ China’s Konka Group and Lucent Technologies Inc. have agreed to develop an advanced mobile phone for the Chinese market, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.
They plan to develop a phone ``characterized by high speed data transmission, advanced language and image processing technology, and very low energy consumption,″ Xinhua said in a report late Sunday.
``Konka is confident of having 20 percent of the domestic mobile phone market in three years,″ Konka Group general manager Chen Weirong told Xinhua.
Konka is one of China’s largest makers of home appliances, specializing in color televisions for export, and lists B-shares for foreign investors on the Shenzhen stock exchange. The technology cooperation deal with Lucent, based in Murray Hill, N.J., will allow Konka to diversify into the telecommunications field.
China’s mobile phone market is growing quickly. Information Industry Minister Wu Jichuan told a forum in Geneva that he expects mobile phone subscribers to increase from 26 million to about 200 million within the next decade, Xinhua said.
