Cargo truck overturns in Haiti, killing 15

October 10, 2014

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Authorities in Haiti say a cargo truck has overturned on a rural road, killing 15 people who were riding on top.

Police Inspector Francius Simeon says another 14 people were injured in the accident Friday near the town of Morne a Cabrit, northeast of the capital.

The truck was headed to Port-au-Prince with a load of charcoal and avocados when the brakes apparently failed and the driver lost control. Simeon says 13 women and two men were killed, including the driver.

Public transportation is scarce in Haiti and it is common to see people riding atop cargo trucks.
