INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Maurice McAfee scored 20 points and James Posey added 15 points and 12 rebounds and No. 16 Xavier overcame a 12-point first-half in a 73-66 season-opening victory over Butler on Tuesday night.

Butler (0-2) dominated most of the first half as Mike Pflugner and Mike Marshall combined for 17 points.

Pflugner, who finished with 16 points, gave the Bulldogs their biggest lead, 23-11, with a layup with 6:12 to go in the first half.

Xavier steadily chipped away at the Bulldogs' lead and McAfee kept the Musketeers in the game with 18 points in the first half, including their last nine. He hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Xavier its first lead, 28-26.

The Musketeers led by 15 points with about seven minutes left in the game, but Butler pulled within 67-63 when Andy Hirschy made a 3-pointer with 1:02 left.

Xavier then scored six points from the free throw line in the final minute, including the last four by Posey.
