W. Kentucky 71, La Salle 63
BAYAMON, Puerto Rico (AP) _ Chris Robinson and Tony Lovan led five players in double figures as the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers held off La Salle 71-63 Sunday on the final day of the Puerto Rico Shootout.
Taking advantage of La Salle’s poor shooting, the Hilltoppers put together a 13-2 run early in the second half for a 53-37 lead on Lovan’s three-point play with 13:51 to go.
Western Kentucky (1-2), coming off an 86-85 loss to American University of Puerto Rico in the second round, led 35-32 at halftime.
Michael Adams helped Western increase its lead to 58-42 with 9:47 to go on a layup.
The Explorers (0-3), however, then mounted a run of their own, led by sophomre guard Mike Gizzi and junior forward Everett Catlin.
Romaine Haywood, who led La Salle with 17 points, scored two free throws to cut Western’s lead to 58-48 with less than eight minutes to go. Catlin and Gizzi each had baskets in a 17-3 La Salle run that cut the lead to 61-59 with 2:43 left on a free throw by Gizzi.
Western, however, went back ahead 67-59 with 31 seconds to play on consecutive baskets by Chris Robinson, Brad Divinie and Michael Fraliex.
Robinson and Lovan finished with 13 points a piece to lead WKU’s offense while Haywood finished with 17 to lead La Salle.
