Windber to participate in WalkWorks
Windber Borough along with the Windber Municipal Authority, Windber Area School District and Chan Soon-Shiong Medical Center at Windber are participating with the Pennsylvania Department of Health and University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health in a free program designed to increase opportunities for physical activity called WalkWorks. WalkWorks aims to improve the health status of the population through development of fun, fact-filled walking routes that are accessible to individuals of all ages and abilities; facilitation of walking groups lead by a group leader; and promotion of policy development to enhance opportunities for active transportation. The Pennsylvania State Health Improvement Plan 2015-2020 cites WalkWorks as an activity toward achieving its goal of decreasing the percentage of adults who engage in no leisure-time physical activity from 26% in 2013 to 23% by December 2020. A kick off of the event will be held on at 11 a.m. June 5 — with a rain date of June 6 — at the Windber Recreation Park. Approximately 300 Windber students are set to participate in the event, which is open to the public. For more information go to www.pawalkworks.com or call 814-467-9014.
