Tension grips Rio slum after wave of police, gang fighting
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Intense violence is once again gripping one of Rio de Janeiro’s largest complex of slums, with several suspects and bystanders shot as gangs and police exchange intense gunfire.
A 41-year-old housewife in the Complexo Alemao has died after being hit by a stray bullet. And at least two suspected gang members were killed during that firefight on Wednesday. Another three people were shot as well, all believed to have no connections to gangs.
One policeman was hurt.
A police post in area was attacked by suspected gang members armed with Molotov cocktails and burned early Thursday.
Amateur videos showed police using tear gas and stun grenades against residents enraged by the shootings, who angrily confronted officers.
