Driver who fled police found guilty of causing fatal crash

November 9, 2017

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — A Maryland driver who caused a fatal wrong-way collision while fleeing police has been found guilty of grossly negligent manslaughter.

The Capital reports that 32-year-old Johnathan Derek Simms, of Woodlawn, was convicted in an Annapolis court Wednesday on multiple charges in connection with the April 2016 crash in Glen Burnie.

Police say a trooper had tried to stop Simms for speeding, but the driver sped off. The chase came to an end about 4 miles (6 kilometers) later when Simms crashed head-on into a car driven by 66-year-old Louise Donner of Linthicum, killing her.

Simms is scheduled to be sentenced in January.
