Human remains found south of Beatrice
Human remains were found in rural Gage County and are being investigated by authorities.
A Gage County resident was walking in a rural area south of Beatrice near West Locust Road on Thursday and came upon skeletal remains.
He called the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and an investigator and a deputy responded to the area and met with the caller, who led them to apparent human skeletal remains, according to a press release.
Sheriff Millard Gustafson said the remains have not been identified.
“We’ll be doing an autopsy and have specialists check it over and see if the they can identify the remains,” Gustafson said. “We’re just in the preliminary stages of the investigation. There’s a lot to get examined. Any time you find human remains it’s a concern, but you can’t speculate anything that’s why you have these specialists do their testing and see if there’s some way we can identify these remains.”
The investigation of the case was coordinated with the Beatrice Police Department, investigators from the Nebraska State Patrol and the Gage County Sheriff’s Office. The property owners in the area were made aware of the investigation and are fully cooperating with investigators, the press release stated.
Evidence collected at the scene will be evaluated and, if necessary, sent to the Nebraska State Patrol Crime Laboratory and to anthropologists at the Nebraska State Historical Society.
