US Sen. Markey praises Obama on “smart gun” technology push
BOSTON (AP) — U.S. Sen. Edward Markey is praising President Barack Obama for pushing for more research into gun safety technology.
Obama has directed the Departments of Defense, Justice, and Homeland Security to conduct or sponsor research into the technology, including a review of the availability of “smart gun” technology and potential ways to increase its development to improve gun safety.
Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat, has pushed to require all new guns to incorporate smart gun technology so they can be fired only by their owners or other authorized users.
Gun advocates have pushed back against the proposal saying no technology should stand between lawful gun owners using their firearms.
Obama is expected to announce in the coming days a series of steps he plans to take on his own aimed at curbing gun violence.
