HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP Local cross country stars run wild
There were several winning performances turned in by local high school cross country teams at various invitational meets on Saturday.
At the 44th-annual Manchester (N.H.) Invitational, Pomperaug’s Kate Wiser won the girls large-school race with a time of 17:49, which was only seven seconds shy of the course record at Derryfield Park. Danbury’s Lauren Moore finished sixth in that race in 19:02. In the girls small-school race, Immaculate won the team title with 78 points, 68 points ahead of South Kingstown (R.I.) n second place. For the Mustangs, Angela Saidman placed sixth (19:41), Taylor Mascetta finished 14th (20:25), Kaitlyn Segreti came in 17th (20:29), Natalie Dudas took 22nd (20:40) and Ailene Doherty finished 28th (20:52). Christina Carboni finished 68th (21:58) and Brigid Gage took 79th (22:21) to round out the Mustangs’ top seven.
On the boys side, New Fairfield’s Anthony Golino finished 13th in the small-school race in 17:17.
At the seventh-annual Winding Trails Invitational in Farmington, meanwhile, the New Milford girls won the team title with 42 points, 32 points better than Avon in second place. The Green Wave’s Claire Daniels won the race in her first high school invitational with a time of 18:58 and was closely followed by Katie Delaney in second (19:00) and Brooke Morabito in third (19:04).
“The three ran a great team race together, passing the leader at the 2.5-mile mark and never looking back,” New Milford coach Giles Vaughan said in an email.
Shannon Palmer came in eighth for New Milford (19:52), breaking 20 minutes for the first time in her career. Julia Colley rounded out the scoring in 28th place (22:08), followed by Britney Flores in 38th (22:46) and Jessica Baranowski in 42nd (22:56).
At the Ocean State Invitational at Goddard Park in Warwick, R.I., Brookfield placed first in the Boys Varsity 1 race with the team of Jadon Parris, Daniel Finck, David Finck, Colby Cox, Nolan Reilly and Will Mahan. For the Brookfield girls in the Varsity 1 race, Juliet Bussell took second (19:13.87) and Claire Lennon 24th (20:53.32).
In an interesting side note from that meet, in the girls championship race, nationally ranked Katelyn Tuohy of North Rockland High School (Thiells, N.Y.) trimmed 90 seconds off the course record, running 16:09, which would have been second in the boys championship race. The North Rockland girls won the team title.
