DA: Horse riding center swindled out of $1.1M by wanted man
HAMILTON, Mass. (AP) — Prosecutors say a man wanted in Pennsylvania siphoned more than $1.1 million from the owners of a Massachusetts horse riding facility.
Prosecutors say Jerry Dawson swindled three Pennsylvania jewelers out of more than $100,000 before disappearing in 1990.
He later became a manager at the Canter Brook Equestrian Center in Hamilton, Massachusetts.
Prosecutors say Dawson told the owners the facility was struggling financially and transferred money they had sent him to cover perceived operating losses into accounts he’d set up under the names of bogus corporations.
The Salem News reports (http://bit.ly/1GSnKcE ) Dawson was arraigned Tuesday in Salem Superior Court and is being held on $100,000 bail. He pleaded not guilty to larceny and making false financial statements, among other charges.
Another hearing is scheduled for Nov. 3.
