School district says finances to cause closures, layoffs
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A county school district in Mississippi says it’s going to close two elementary schools and lay off workers to help curb its financial troubles.
The Clarion Ledger reports the Noxubee County School District will transfer the affected students to other schools effective Oct. 5. Interim Superintendent Rodriguez Broadnax says workers ranging from support staff to administrators will be laid off, but didn’t specify how many employees will be affected.
Gov. Phil Bryant issued a proclamation this summer that declared the school system in a state of emergency and allowed the state to take over its control. State education system officials have said an audit of the 1,600-student system indicated the F-rated district could have been operating at a loss of $2 million by December.
