More than two decades after starting as a humble “program,” the Smithsonian’s Asian Pacific American Center is launching a major fundraising effort for permanent gallery space. If successful, the gallery would join the National Museum of the American Indian, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the soon-to-be Molina Family Latino Gallery in staking a spot along the National Mall, where millions of people visit every year to celebrate American history, its monuments and its government. _ HOMELESS WOMAN KILLED-ARREST _ Police in central California say an anonymous tip has led them to identify and arrest a man wanted on suspicion of killing a homeless woman.
_ APARTMENT COMPLEX-SHOOTING _ A woman was killed and three others, including a 4-year-old boy, were wounded by gunfire in an apartment complex in South Sacramento.
_ PASSENGER IMPALED _ Authorities say somebody stole a tripod from a California Department of Transportation crew and then dropped it from an overpass onto a Sacramento freeway, impaling the lung of a passenger in a van.
LAS VEGAS _ Actor and standup comedian Sammy Shore, who co-founded the Comedy Store, has died at the age of 92. The family said through a spokeswoman that Shore died Saturday at his Las Vegas home. He was the father of Pauly Shore. Sammy Shore’s nearly seven-decade career stretched from New York’s “Borscht Belt” summer resorts to Las Vegas and the studios of Hollywood. Shore, his first wife Mitzi and writing partner Rudy Deluca founded the world-famous Los Angeles comedy club, the Comedy Store, in 1972.
