Store Customer Breaks Up Attempted Lowell Robbery

September 16, 2018

LOWELL -- A scuffle broke out between a robber, armed with a BB gun, and a customer inside a convenience store in the Sacred Heart neighborhood on Saturday afternoon, authorities say.

Juan Amaro, 21, of Lowell, entered the 7-Eleven at 970 Gorham St. at around 2:50 p.m. demanding money and telling the store’s clerk he had a gun, according to Lowell police Capt. Paul Laferriere.

“The clerk states that the suspect was a regular customer,” Laferriere said. ” She did see the butt of a gun in his waistband.”

A customer who had entered the store saw the attempted robbery unfold and started wrestling with Amaro, who broke free and fled the store, Laferriere said. The weapon, which was dropped, turned out to be a BB gun.

Amaro was later seen by police, leading to a short pursuit and his capture, according to Laferriere.

He was charged with armed robbery, assault with dangerous weapon, disorderly conduct and railroad trespassing.

There were no injuries reported.

Amaro was also wanted on warrants for failure to appear in court for possession and the distribution of Class A drugs, according to Lowell police.

He is being held by police pending his arraignment in Lowell District Court on Monday.
