RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ Senior guard Nate McMillan scored a career-high 19 points to lead four players in double figures as 15th-ranked North Carolina State defeated Western Carolina 80-57 in college basketball Monday night.

Freshman forward Chucky Brown chipped in with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore center Chris Washburn and freshman Kelsey Weems added 13 points each in the season-opener for both teams.

Sophomore forward Leroy Gasque paced the Catamounts with 19 points and 11 rebounds, and junior guard Vincent Walker added 11 points.

Western Carolina took a 6-4 lead before the Wolfpack reeled off an 11-2 spurt to move ahead 15-8 with 13:20 left in the first half.

A baseline jumper by Floyd Showers pulled the Catamounts within 15-12 a minute later, but Western Carolina could get no closer the rest of the game.

Weems and McMillan led a late first-half surge that gave the Wolfpack a 35-24 halftime lead.

The Wolfpack, paced by McMillan and Washburn, maintained a lead of 12 to 17 points during most of the second half, extending their edge late in the game with 65 percent free-throw shooting.

Wolfpack coach Jim Valvano experimented with lineups, starting two freshmen, two sophomores and one senior, and rotating players regularly.
