Man loses suit saying police falsely arrested him to get OT

February 24, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City corner-store clerk who said police trumped up a drug charge against him to make overtime pay has lost his civil rights case.

A Brooklyn federal jury delivered its verdict Friday in Hector Cordero’s lawsuit. If jurors had found in his favor, a second trial would have probed allegations of “collars for dollars,” or police making dubious arrests late in their shifts to net overtime.

Cordero was arrested in 2014 after police said they saw him sell crack outside the store. The charges were later dropped.

Four officers involved in his arrest collectively claimed over 20 hours of overtime.

City lawyers said there was probable cause for the arrest, despite the later dismissal.

Cordero tells the New York Post he’s “very sad” about the verdict.
