North Dakota ranks low among states in lung cancer cases
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The American Lung Association says North Dakota ranks among the states with the lowest rate of lung cancer patients nationwide.
KVRR-TV says in North Dakota, 57 people for every 100,000 are diagnosed with lung cancer, putting the state eleventh among the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
The Peace Garden State also falls among the top 25 percent in the nation in lung cancer survival rate. Doctors recommend smokers between the ages of 55 and 70 and those who have been smoking for 30 years should be screened for lung cancer.
Sanford Health clinical nurse specialist Sharri Lacher says the sooner lung cancer is detected, the better the outcome.
