North Chelmsford Dealing with Multiple Water-main Breaks

May 2, 2019

CHELMSFORD -- The North Chelmsford Water District this morning is addressing the last of five water-main breaks.

Water District Superintendent Bruce J. Harper said the breaks were the result of routine maintenance.

“We took one of our water-storage tanks out for maintenance and were going to start draining the tank,” Harper said Thursday shortly after 9 a.m. “We isolated the tank, and for some reason it must have caused some kind of pressure in the system and it resulted in these breaks we’re getting.”

Harper said there were a total of five water-main breaks, one of which was discovered Wednesday, around 3:30 p.m. He said the last one that was being fixed is near Cottage Row and Princeton Street.

A notice on the district’s website reads: “Starting May 1, 2019, The North Chelmsford Water District will be draining the Washington Street Water Tower to make necessary improvements, you may experience discoloration in your water for a few days.”
