Cleveland St. 74, Wis.-Milwaukee 67

MILWAUKEE (AP) _ Malcolm Sims scored 23 points and Michael Bownes added 15 as Cleveland State defeated Wisconsin-Milwaukee 74-67 Saturday.

Cleveland State (4-9 overall and 2-2 in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference) also got 12 points apiece from Eric Nichelson and James Madison.

Milwaukee (4-9, 1-2) was led by freshman center John Gilmore, who had a career-high 21 points.

After Milwaukee’s Pat McCabe completed a three-point play to tie the game at 36-36, the Vikings went on a 14-4 run to go ahead 50-40. Cleveland State led the rest of the way.

Madison had a pair of 3-pointers and scored 8 points in the decisive spurt, which he ended with a jumper with 10:11 left.

Milwaukee pulled to within two at 58-56 on a basket by Otto McDuffie with 2:48 left, but Sims followed with a 3-pointer and the Panthers never got that close again.

Cyrus Caldwell hit a pair of free throws with five seconds left in the first half to narrow Cleveland State’s lead at intermission to one point at 34-33.

Milwaukee had jumped out to a 13-6 lead but Cleveland State, with Sims contributing 8 points, went on a 14-6 run and took the lead at 20-19 on a basket by Madison with six minutes left. The teams traded the lead almost continuously after that until Eric Nichelson hit two straight baskets to give the Vikings a 30-27 lead, which they held the rest of the period.
