Devante Smith-Pelly clears waivers, remains in Capitals organization
No NHL team claimed Devante Smith-Pelly off waivers by noon Wednesday, meaning the fan-favorite forward can be assigned to the Washington Capitals’ top minor league affiliate.
It is up to the Capitals now whether to assign Smith-Pelly to the AHL Hershey Bears. The winger has not played in the AHL since the 2013-14 season.

Smith-Pelly, the Stanley Cup hero who scored three goals against Vegas in the finals, was surprisingly waived Wednesday after the Capitals initially wanted to place Dmitrij Jaskin on waivers. The move comes as Monday’s NHL trade deadline approaches, and the transaction was widely seen as a move Washington made to make room for a new acquisition.
After the trade deadline, there is no 23-man roster limit for NHL squads, provided they keep themselves under the salary cap, so Smith-Pelly could return if the numbers work out.
The Capitals visit the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday.
