Houston Fires Coach Brooks

March 1, 1998

HOUSTON (AP) _ Alvin Brooks was fired Sunday as head basketball coach of the University of Houston, effective April 3. He’ll be paid off the remainder of a contract that was scheduled to run through April 2000.

The Cougars were 9-19 this season, 2-14 in Conference USA, in Brooks’ fifth season as head coach. They will play in Wednesday’s opening round of the Conference USA tournament.

``It is clear that there is a need at this time to engage new leadership to revitalize interest and national competitiveness in our basketball program,″ Houston athletic director Chet Gladchuk said.

The search for a new head coach will begin immediately, Gladchuk said.

Brooks was named head coach in 1993 after serving as an assistant at Houston since 1986. His teams have compiled a 54-83 record, 5-25 in two seasons in Conference USA. The three previous seasons, they were 21-21 in the Southwest Conference.

``We must rekindle confidence in our program’s ambition and ability to succeed at the highest level,″ Gladchuk said.

Houston has made 18 NCAA tournament appearances, the last in 1992 under Brooks’ predecessor, Pat Foster. The Cougars went to five Final Fours under Guy Lewis, reaching the title game in 1983 and 1984. The other Final Four appearances were in 1967, 1968 and 1982.
