US authorities detain 57 migrants near Puerto Rico
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — U.S. federal authorities say they have detained 57 migrants from Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Brazil in separate incidents near Puerto Rico’s west coast.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Thursday that authorities will prosecute 19 of those migrants, five of them on human smuggling charges.
The agency said authorities have repatriated 18 Haitian migrants and detained two Dominican migrants in one case.
Authorities also have repatriated another 20 Dominican migrants and detained 17 others from the Dominican Republic and Brazil for prosecution in a separate case.
Both groups of had traveled through the treacherous Mona Passage between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
