Puerto Rico to receive $14M for energy assistance

October 21, 2014

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Puerto Rico is to receive $14 million in federal funds to help low-income families in the U.S. territory pay their power bills.

Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi said Tuesday that Puerto Rico had previously received $4 million annually under a federal energy assistance program.

Power bills in Puerto Rico are on average more than twice those on the U.S. mainland.

The island’s government is overseeing a revamping of the state power company following complaints of corruption and costly bills. Puerto Rico currently depends on oil to generate nearly 70 percent of its electricity.
