Error detected in Quartey-Lopez fight score; Draw declared
LEDYARD, Conn. (AP) _ The Ike Quartey-Jose Luis Lopez welterweight title fight was declared a draw Thursday, after an error was detected on the official score sheet.
Quartey, of Ghana, will keep the World Boxing Association welterweight title, although his record now will read 34-0-1, said Foxwoods’ boxing spokesman Ted Panagiotis.
Quartey was originally announced the winner Friday night at Foxwoods Resort Casino on scores of 115-114 from judge Phillippe Verbek, 116-112 from judge Ricardo Duncan and 113-113 from judge Will Hutt.
Upon review of the scorecards, it was determined Verbek’s scorecard actually read 114-114, making the official decision a majority draw.
The scorecards from the three judges were given to Connecticut Boxing Commissioner John Burns for the official tabulation, which is when the error occurred, Panagiotis said.
Burns could not be reached for comment Thursday.
The decision adds another draw to Lopez’s record, making it 39-3-2.
