PITTSBURGH (AP) _ Jermaine Allensworth grounded a three-run double down the left-field line in the fifth inning and Pittsburgh ran Cincinnati’s road losing streak to eight, holding off the chilled Reds 3-2 Thursday night.

Esteban Loaiza (2-0) shook off winter-like weather and a run-scoring triple by pitcher Mike Morgan (0-1). Loaiza limited the Reds to six hits in seven innings in his third consecutive effective start.

The temperature dropped to 34 by the ninth inning, light snow fell briefly and wind gusts lowered the wind-chill reading into the low 20s. Reds second baseman Bret Boone wore a ski mask in the field and stadium vendors passed out free hot chocolate to the estimated 2,000 fans.

The paid attendance was 6,039, but many of those skipped the game because of the weather and the Pittsburgh Penguins’ NHL playoff game.

John Ericks pitched the ninth for his fifth save. The Reds scored a run on catcher Jason Kendall’s wild throw on a double steal, but Barry Larkin lined out to first baseman Kevin Young with runners at first and third to end the game.

Marlins 2, Cardinals 1

MIAMI (AP) _ Pinch-hitter Jeff Conine’s solo homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Florida Marlins over St. Louis.

Florida tied the game in the eighth against Todd Stottlemyre on a two-out RBI single by Edgar Renteria, who stepped to the plate batting just .179.

Conine’s third homer off the season, against Mark Petkovsek (1-2), landed just inside the left-field foul pole. Mark Hutton (1-1) pitched two scoreless innings for the victory.
