Cops: Japan Finance Official Dead

May 7, 1998

TOKYO (AP) _ An official who worked at Japan’s beleaguered finance ministry has hanged himself, police said Thursday, just days after the suicide of a senior central bank executive.

Koji Onishi, 28, was discovered hanging Wednesday night in his room in a Finance Ministry dormitory in Tokyo, said police spokesman Shigetada Nagaoka.

He was the third finance ministry official to commit suicide so far this year.

Onishi was a junior official in the ministry’s International Finance Division. Because of his young age, he was unlikely to have been involved in a bribery scandal that has rocked Japan’s most powerful bureaucracy, Kyodo News reported.

``This is something I decided by myself,″ read a suicide note found in his room.

The ministry has been a primary target of an investigation into influence-peddling by bureaucrats who were wined and dined by banks and other businesses subject to government regulation.

On Saturday, Takayuki Kamoshida, the Bank of Japan’s chief executive in charge of anti-corruption efforts, hanged himself in Tokyo.
