Bank Customer Armed Only With Envelope Captures Would-be Robber

June 18, 1985

MIAMI (AP) _ A businessman armed only with a manila envelope got the drop on a knife- wielding bank robbery suspect after chasing him a block, pointing the envelope at him and shouting, ″Freeze 3/8″ police said.

Horace Elvin Hurt, of Virginia, who told police he committed the robbery because he needed to buy food, was arrested Monday, said police spokesman Reginald Roundtree. Hurt was turned over to the FBI, he said.

Spurgeon Brown, who asked to be identified only as ″a visiting Bahamanian businessman,″ saw Hurt waving a knife in a Barnett Bank branch teller’s face after she refused to give him money, Roundtree said.

After Brown chased him, Hurt dropped his knife and two bags of money containing $1,879, and Brown marched him back to the bank, he said.
