Hockey Scout Jack Bowman Dies

June 22, 1998

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) _ Jack Bowman, a longtime scout and brother of Detroit Red Wings coach Scotty Bowman, died Monday morning during surgery for heart problems. He was 61.

Bowman was undergoing routine bypass surgery in London, Ontario, when he began experiencing complications. Doctors believed he suffered a heart attack during the operation.

Bowman joined the Sabres staff in 1980 when Scotty Bowman was coach and stayed with the team as one of its top scouts in Ontario and Europe. He was promoted to scouting director two years ago.

``As good a scout as Jack was, he was a better person,″ Sabres general manager Darcy Regier said. ``This is a sad day for the organization and a sad day for hockey.″

Bowman worked closely with Sabres personnel director Don Luce and was expected to be a key figure for the team during the NHL Entry Draft on Saturday in Buffalo.

Bowman is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his daughter, Heather; and his son Steve. Steve Bowman is a scout for the Washington Capitals.
