Weber State 81, Mount St. Mary’s, Md. 73

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) _ Damien Baskerville scored 29 points, including 14 of his team’s final 22, as Weber State held off Mount St. Mary’s 81-73 Friday in the Iowa Super Shootout.

Alex Fisher added 19 points and James Smith 10 for the Wildcats, who won their first game of the year against three losses. Weber State will play in Saturday’s championship against the winner of the Rice-Iowa contest, which started later.

Gregory Harris scored 26 points, Gerben van Dorpe 14 and Irv Conwell 13 for the Mountaineers (1-4), who will play for third place.

Neither team led by more than five points as Weber State opened a 35-33 halftime lead. The Wildcats scored 12 of the first 15 points in the second half to open a 47-36 lead with 13:58 remaining.

Fisher started the spurt with a baseline jumper, followed with a 3-pointer on his next shot and then capped the run with another long-range shot along the baseline.

The Mountaineers chipped away and pulled within four, 59-55, when Tony Hayden sank one of two free throws. But Baskerville kept Weber State in front, getting most of his points from the free throw line. He sank nine of 12 from the line in the final 3:31.

Harris scored the final 12 points for the Mountaineers, including a 3-pointer with 24.3 seconds to play, to bring Mount St. Mary’s to within 79-73. Baskerville hit two of four free throws for the final margin.
