FIFA official Makudi’s Thailand election appealed
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — FIFA executive committee member Worawi Makudi’s re-election as president of the Football Association of Thailand has been challenged at sport’s highest court.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport says an appeal by defeated candidate Virach Chanpanich will be heard March 25-26.
The court says Chanpanich seeks to overturn the election result from last October.
Makudi defeated Chanpanich 42-28 in a secret ballot which was delayed several months amid wrangling over election rules.
FIFA had warned the Thailand federation it faced suspension if a club’s attempted civil court action against Makudi’s authority went ahead.
Makudi has been FAT president since 2007.
He joined FIFA’s ruling board 17 years ago and was a long-time ally of former Asian football leader Mohamed bin Hammam.
