U.S., Sweden To Issue Nobel Stamps
WASHINGTON (AP) _ The United States and Sweden will jointly issue new postage stamps next week marking the centennial of the Nobel Prize.
The stamps will be dedicated in ceremonies Thursday at the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History here.
First issued in 1901, the Nobel Prizes were established in the will of Swedish-born inventor and industrialist Alfred Nobel. They are presented annually in December for work in such areas as physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and efforts to promote world peace.
A new exhibition, ``Nobel Voices: Celebrating 100 Years of the Nobel Prize,″ opens April 26 at the Museum of American History. It will present, in their own words, the stories of Nobel winners.
The new Swedish and American stamps were engraved by Czeslaw Slania, the world-famous, Polish-born, Swedish stamp engraver.
