Recycling crackdown leads to violations

December 25, 2018

MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) — Latah Sanitation Inc. workers have placed 1,662 contamination tags on recycling carts in Moscow, Idaho, since the marking process began Nov. 1.

The Moscow-Pullman Daily News reports that’s about 50 violations every recycling collection day.

Carts can be tagged if there are visible non-recyclable materials in the container.

Collectors will leave the cart full and place a red tag on it if it does not pass the test.

The crackdown came after the Moscow City Council voted in August to restrict items accepted in the city’s single-stream curbside recycling program.

Residents are still adjusting to the changes.

Metal, aluminum and tin cans, and mixed paper are accepted in curbside carts. Plastic bags and aluminum foil are no longer accepted.
