COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) _ Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Eric Weinrich and eight other National Hockey League players were named Wednesday to the United States team that will compete in the World Championships next month.

David Poile of Nashville, Tenn., general manager of the national team, said the remainder of the team, which will be comprised of players from minor leagues, European pro leagues and colleges, will be announced next week.

Besides Weinrich, others named to the squad include: defenseman Adam Burt, Carolina Hurricanes; goaltender Garth Snow, Vancouver Canucks; and forwards Bates Battaglis, Hurricanes; Tom Chorske and Bryan Smolinski, New York Islanders; Matt Cullen and Ted Drury, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim; and Darby Hendrickson, Toronto Maple Leafs.
