Phoenix start fast, hold on for 31-16 win over KML
Cole Burow hit Nathan de Galley for a pair of touchdowns and ran for another as Luther Prep built a 24-0 lead before hanging on for Friday’s 31-16 football win over Kettle Moraine Lutheran at Umnus Field.
“Cole did some good things for us with his arm and legs,” Luther Prep coach Justin Gregorious said. “I was really happy for him in his second varsity game.”
KML (0-2) cut it to eight with 2:33 to play but after an onside kick attempt went out of bounds, Brice Guse bolted 47 yards to seal the win two plays later. The Phoenix were able to even their record at 1-1 while the Chargers extended their losing streak to 20 games.
Defensively, the hosts forced six turnovers as KML fumbled seven times and lost four of them. LPS also picked off a pair of Benjamin Washburn passes.
“We really came up big defensively in the first half,” Gregorious said.
Zach Scheuerlein recovered a fumble to stop a KML drive in Luther Prep territory in the first quarter. On the final play of the opening stanza, de Galley made a terrific grab over the top of a defender that was interfering with him, peeled off of him and finished the 35-yard scoring play.
“Nathan is a wonderful receiver,” Gregorious said. “We moved him out of the backfield and we’re trying to use his gifts out there.”
KML was forced to punt on its next possession and disaster was averted when Scheuerlein pounced on the loose ball after the punt touched a Phoenix player. LPS drove 85 yards, ignited when Preston Borchardt trampled a Charger on a nine-yard run three plays in and capped when Burow hit de Galley behind the KML secondary from 37 yards away.
Washburn fumbled on the next KML play from scrimmage. After a Luther Prep penalty, Burow scrambled around the left end and with the aid of two downfield blocks, found the end zone with ease from 25 yards out.
Washburn coughed it up for the second time in as many plays from his own 20. The Phoenix drove to the KML 5 before a pair of penalties forced the hosts to settle for Yuri Soloviyov’s 32-yard field goal and a 24-0 edge 2:50 before halftime.
Christian Koelpin recovered another Washburn fumble at the Charger 47 three plays into the second half. But the Phoenix would grind to a halt offensively and the guests would cap a 12-play, 70-yard march with a 2-yard TD run from Jacob Byhardt and a conversion run from Washburn.
KML would go on a 15-play drive with its next possession only to turn it over on downs at the Phoenix 19. But on the next play, Burow took his fourth sack of the game and fumbled the ball away in the process at his own 7.
“He wants to make a play,” Gregorious said.
Washburn scored three plays later and hit Preston Barrett with the conversion to make things nervy with 2:33 remaining. But the Chargers tried a chip kick over the first line with their onside attempt and knocked the ball well out of bounds.
Borchardt, who finished with 117 yards on 18 carries, took a pitch around the end for 13 yards. On the next play, Guse popped loose on an inside trap and put the proceedings to rest.
For good measure, he picked off Washburn so the Phoenix could run out the clock. Guse carried six times for 82 yards and while Burow hit just three of 12 passes, two of them wound up in the end zone.
“We have a young team and a bunch of guys playing their second varsity games,” Gregorious said. “It’s a good win for us.”
LPS will try to make it two straight when Westfield visits next week. The Pioneers were trounced, 46-6, by Montello/Princeton-Green Lake in their latest contest.
