Billy Porter speaks on Oscars gown and social media hate

February 26, 2019

NEW YORK (AP) — When Billy Porter put on a huge tuxedo gown and walked the Oscars red carpet, he knew exactly what he would face when the social media choir weighed in. And he was right.

Capping years of thought-provoking fashion, the singer and actor was both resoundingly supported and excoriated for furthering a perceive plot to effeminate men of color. It was just the conversation Porter had hoped to provoke, not to collect virulent hate but to help move along the idea that we all deserve respect, across racial lines and the gender divide.

Porter told The Associated Press in a post-Oscar interview he’ll remain “inside of my authenticity.” The idea, he says, is people need to give him as much respects as he does them.
