Car Strikes Yard Sale, 13 Injured

October 2, 1995

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) _ Thirteen people were hurt Sunday when a driver chased a terrified family through city streets until they crashed and his car careened into a crowd at a yard sale, police said.

The 19-year-old driver was injured along with all five people in the car he was chasing and seven people at the yard sale.

Police said they didn’t know why Adam Almeida was trying to run the other car off the road. He was to be arraigned Monday on 12 counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, said Lt. Paul Desrosiers.

Desrosiers said Almeida rammed a car driven by Jose Carreiro Jr. three times during a mile-long pursuit, then forced it into a parked car. Almeida’s car then ricocheted onto the sidewalk.

``We’d seen it coming but what can you do about it? You can’t even move,″ said Elaine Horta, whose brother, Clement Blais, fractured his pelvis. ``You wouldn’t believe the mess and the blood everywhere.″

Almeida, of Colrain, suffered a concussion in the crash. All but four of the victims remained in the hospital Sunday, some in critical condition.
