Preparation for region play complete
BULLHEAD CITY — The Arizona Interscholastic Association 4A Grand Canyon Region T-birds lost two games and tied one during the past three days in what might very well have been a case of tough love.
After falling 6-0 to the Gilbert High School Tigers on Wednesday and 2-1 to the host Lions at Red Mountain High School on Thursday, the Mohave High School boys soccer team tied the Skyline High School Coyotes 2-2 on Friday, which concluded the third and final day of the Red Mountain College Showcase in Mesa, Ariz.
“They were all 6A schools and the boys definitely have built some confidence going into all-region games coming up.” said Mohave head coach Matt Camacho by text message about his T-birds’ progressive improvement as the tourney moved on.
“We tied 2-2,” Camacho said. “It was great game with almost two minutes to the end of the game Renzo Perez made a huge save from a penalty kick.”
Mohave took a 1-0 lead when Deyvi Fuentes scored off a header from a corner kick from Logan Burgess during the 15th minute.
The Coyotes tied it at 1-1 right before halftime and they scored at about minute 50 to go ahead 2-1.
The T-birds tied it at 2-2 at about minute 80.
“In my opinion, it was a bogus call for the penalty that Renzo Perez ended up saving anyways,” Camacho said. “But, all in all, we played a very good team and the boys rose to the occasion with Seth Velasco out with an injury and Phillip Camacho due to (U.S. Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program) responsibilities.”
The losses dropped the T-birds’ record to 5-6-1 overall, 0-2 in conference and 0-0 in region, according to aiaonline.org.
