KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ Missouri-Kansas City has fired head basketball coach Bob Sundvold, the university announced Tuesday.

Sundvold, who has spent the last four seasons at UMKC, was released as coach and will not be reassigned to other duties, athletics director Bob Thomas said.

``I made this decision after considering the best interests of UMKC and its men's basketball program in both the near-term and long-term future,'' Thomas said.

The Kangaroos were 43-70 under Sundvold, including 16-13 last season when they finished tied for second in the Mid-Continent conference, their first winning record since the 1991-92 season.

Sundvold was head coach at Central Missouri State before succeeding Lee Hunt as coach at UMKC. He was also an assistant at South Dakota State, Missouri and Southwest Missouri State.
