City to Host Ward Cleanups
By Mina Corpuz
FITCHBURG -- Grab your work gloves and get ready to clean up the neighborhood at city-hosted ward cleanups and other events starting at the end of the month.
“The City of Fitchburg (is) seeking to work together to TAKE PRIDE in our city and help to clean the streets and parks,” the Health Department wrote in its April newsletter.
Trash bags and disposal will be provided for all cleanups.
The first event that will take place April 27 is Ward 6 cleanup and a citywide recycling and shredding event for Earth Day. It will take place from 8 a.m. to noon at IC Credit Union at 300 Bemis Road.
Items like washers and dryers, refrigerators, and computers will be accepted at the recycling event for free. Televisions, microwaves, batteries, and others items will be collected for a fee.
The other cleanups that will take place around the city are:
* May 4 for Ward 1 meeting at Howarth Playground on Walton Street
* May 11 for Wards 2 and 3 meeting at Daniels St. Park on Fairmount Street in Lower Cleghorn
* May 18 for Wards 4 and 5 meeting at the lot on High and Academy streets
Those who want to bring televisions and monitors to dispose will need to pay a $40 fee. The electronics will be accepted during the May cleanups.
The city cleanups coincide with other cleaning events that are community-led or hosted by organizations in the area.
Each ward cleanup has a Facebook event for more information. Questions can also be answered by contacting the Health Department at 978-829-1870.
