IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa placed volleyball coach Bond Shymansky on paid administrative leave for 30 days for what the school called serious violations of NCAA rules.
Athletic director Gary Barta said he notified the NCAA of the situation Monday after a two-week investigation by a law firm.
He declined to elaborate on the violations at a news conference, citing the NCAA’s pending investigation. He said they related to a “line that can’t be crossed” in college sports but weren’t criminal.
Iowa went 15-16 under Shymansky in 2018, his fifth season in charge of the Hawkeyes. The team won 18 games in 2017, its most since 1994.
Barta said Iowa hired a firm to investigate after receiving allegations from a former athlete May 1. Iowa assistant Vicki Brown has been named interim head coach.
Shmansky didn’t immediately return messages.
