Chinese Open, women’s teams take gold; U.S. earns silver at chess Olympiad

China scored a rare double as its Open, and women’s teams both claimed the gold medal at the 43rd Chess Olympiad that concluded Friday in Batumi, Georgia.

In the 185-nation Open competition, China edged the U.S. and Russia on tiebreaks after all three finished with match records of 8-1-2. The American team, which claimed its first gold medal in 40 years in the 2016 Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan, took home the silver medal this time after drawing the Chinese squad in their final-round match.

In the 151-team women’s competition, China again claimed gold, edging Ukraine. The hometeam Georgian women’s team took bronze.

The U.S. women suffered a 3-1 loss to Ukraine in the final round, winding up in seventh place.
